Directors
David Port, Non Executive Chairman
David Port qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant whilst with National Freight Company Limited where he rose to become Group Chief Accountant and Divisional Finance Director. Following three years at Northern Foods Plc as Finance Director of the dairy division, he joined British Fuels Limited as Finance Director and rose to Chief Executive and Chairman, leading the management buyout from British Coal during the privatisation process and disposing of the business profitably in a trade sale in 1997. From 1997 to 2001 David was Executive Chairman of Sylvan International Limited, a £200 million turnover timber business with operations in France. David is currently Chairman of Petrol Express Limited, Executive Chairman of GNE Limited, Non-executive Director of Voller Energy plc, Non-executive Chairman of Leach Colour Limited, and Non-executive Chairman of WMT Limited. David has been Non-executive Chairman of the Group since its establishment in 1998.
Tom Allchurch, Chief Executive
Tom Allchurch is a graduate mining engineer and has spent his entire career in the development and operation of surface coal mines. Tom initially trained as a Site Engineer with Shand Mining Limited, a contractor to British Coal, before joining Bayford Mining Limited, a smaller private mining company, in 1986. In 1991 Tom joined Rackwood Colliery Company Limited as Projects Manager and was responsible for the development of a number of UK and French projects including Skares Road. Tom left Rackwood in 1998 leading the management team in acquiring the rights to operate (and subsequently acquire) the Skares Road mine. Tom was Chairman of the coal industry trade association, the Confederation of UK Coal Producers, in 2001 and 2002. From 1998 Tom was Managing Director of the Group and became Chief Executive when the Company listed on AIM. Tom is also a Director of The Coal Trade Benevolent Association.
Alistair Black, Operations Director
Alistair is Group Operations Director for the Group and Managing Director of the Surface Mining business. Having commenced his training with Coal Contractors Limited in 1986, Alistair progressed to Site Manager at Roughcastle North site in 1994 before joining Rackwood Colliery Company in 1996 as Regional Production Manager. Alistair joined ATH in 1998 initially as Operations Manager for the Skares Road mine and became Operations Director in 2000. Alistair gained his MBA from Heriot Watt University in 1999 and is currently the Health and Safety Director for the Group.
Steven Beaumont, Group Finance Director & Company Secretary
Steven Beaumont is a Chartered Accountant having previously worked for Arthur Andersen and Deloitte Haskins and Sells. Steven joined the Board in October 2006. Prior to joining ATH, he spent the majority of his career with United Utilities where he was Group Financial Controller, and subsequently Finance Director, and Commercial Director of United Utilities' North West Division. As Commercial Director he was responsible for the investment delivery programme, front line network customer service, commercial activities, supply chain, legal and business services. In addition, he was a trustee of the group pension scheme.
Tim Stokeld, Non Executive Director
Tim has over 30 years experience in finance, beginning his career as a trainee stockbroker with Middlesbrough-based Stancliffe Todd and Hodgson before taking up senior roles in leading financial companies such as Charterhouse where he rose to be appointed Managing Director of Institutional Sales, Head of UK Equities and Head of Equities at CAI Chevreux.
In 2002, Tim left CAI Chevreux to join Seymour Pierce Partners in 2003 as head of Institutional Sales, a post he held for a period of four years. Following this time he had been with BlueOar Securities which he left in April 2009. Tim joined the Board of ATH as Non Executive Director in May 2009.
Vaughan Williams, Non Executive Director
Vaughan Williams has a degree in politics from Exeter University. Vaughan spent four years at British Steel from 1968 to 1972 before joining a predecessor company of BHP Minerals Europe Limited as Coal Sales Manager, later promoted to Director responsible for coal sales in Europe, CIS, the Middle East and Africa. In 1986 Vaughan moved to BHP Coal Australia Pty Limited in Brisbane as Manager of their marketing operations. After returning from Australia, he became Managing Director in 1990 at BHP Minerals Europe Limited. Vaughan then became Vice President Marketing at BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc. in 2000 where he remained until retiring in 2003. Since then he has been actively involved in farming in Oxfordshire. He joined the Group in 2004.
